Ah, the writer’s life

Dan | February 28, 2007

Class, work, meetings, then coming home and wrote

Critique of classmate’s work
A writing exercise on character that helped me with some thoughts
Another 500 words or so of the latest long project, which puts the whole thing in the realm of 75,000 words right now, which means there are more to go, characters to figure out better, [...]

Nailed it

Dan | February 27, 2007

Finally wrote my way past The Revealing Of A Big Plot Point.  I think my body was fighting against this (I hate hate hate writing plot); I was working on the couch now and apparently I fell asleep with one hand on the keyboard and my head in the other hand.  I had an entire [...]

I found the hole in the paper today

Dan | February 27, 2007

In Misery, Stephen King’s main character (I think his name is Paul) talks about finding the hole in the paper - it’s when you’re writing and you kind of disappear through a hole in the paper to the world where your characters are.  For the first time in a long time, I did that today.
OK, [...]

Best description ever

Dan | February 26, 2007

From a guy in one of my classes today:
“I’m all scattered about like a tomato soup sandwich.”
Classic.

A stupid bet

Dan | February 25, 2007

I just bet a friend (she’s slightly younger) that Beyonce would be her generation’s Whitney Houston.  So, if by 2017, Miss Knowles is drugged up, washed up, and trying to get out of her drunk driving arrests by spitting on cops, I win four burritos!  I think my odds are pretty good…

Gradubacate school

Dan | February 20, 2007

Tonight, I feel like a grad student.  Normally, when I think about being in school, I feel like kind of a fraud - grad students are those people with shoulder bags and clunkly glasses who sit around with cups of tea and pitchers of beer, and write impossibly penetrating theses on things that only they [...]

Off for the weekend, again

Dan | February 15, 2007

I’m headed to Death Valley with some friends until Tuesday.  If you’d like some entertainment for your Friday, go over to the Gather.com writing contest and rate my story. If I win (yeah, right), good things will happen.

A quick post on mid-week day

Dan | February 14, 2007

Yep, it’s mid-week day.  Not that other day.  I’m sitting in a coffeehouse, finishing up what work I have to finish for tomorrow (I think I’ll have to head home soon and do my last bit from my couch, as its’ going to close here soon and my bum is hurting from the wooden table, [...]

Health, in two ways

Dan | February 11, 2007

This season’s cold has been a piker - I’ve been kind of out of it for a few days, but was able to buck up enough to attend my former roommate and good friend Raphael’s  going-away party last night.  He’s off to Honduras with the Peace Corps, and he’ll be dong some good work down [...]

Onward to literary glory!

Dan | February 9, 2007

I just sent off a manuscript (two guesses which one) to the contest over at Gather.com, where they’re doing a writing contest - winner gets five grand and a publishing contract.  Basically, they post the first three chapters of a novel, and the community votes on what wins.
So…if you’re a loyal reader of my fiction [...]

Ill, slightly

Dan | February 9, 2007

Have a mild cold, so I’m still in bed at ten in the morning, writing on a blog, which is one of those things that, if mentioned ten years ago, you would have said “what?”
Kind of cool, that.  Anyway, I’ll be drinking tea and writing today; if anything funny occurs, I think I’ll put it [...]

OK, that was awesome

Dan | February 6, 2007

I just wrote a thousand word writing exercise in just over thirty minutes.  It’s not well-done, but it’s a funny idea, and I’m pretty proud of myself for having done it.  Awesome.  I may have my off days, but when I go, I can really go.
Two  things I saw today:
1) There’s a kid who sleeps [...]

A bit of description

Dan | February 3, 2007

I went hiking with some friends today up on Mount Tamalpais (I was supposed to be out tonight and not home writing blog stuff, but some things changed, so that’s ok). It was a wonderful day.  When we were driving up the road to Rock Springs parking lot, we had to stop to wait as [...]

Playing San Franciscan

Dan | February 2, 2007

At a cafe, doing homework, ramping up to do some writing.  Although I doubt I’ll get as much done as I’d like.  But at least I can link over to Penn Jillette, which makes me happy.

There’s something kind of nice about this

Dan | February 1, 2007

I’m writing from bed, after a fourteen hour day of doing stuff (work, shooting a TV interview, work, school.  If I hadn’t gotten a ride home I’d probably still be on MUNI), and I have a rich feeling of satisfaction about today, as everything I wanted to get done got done.
Tomorrow is my day off, [...]
