I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading over the past few days. I read The Shadow of the Torturer and The Claw of the Conciliator, both by Gene Wolfe, and will finish the quartet at some point in the next couple of weeks. I finished Christopher Moore’s latest (A Dirty Job) and just now, [...]

So, the Duke Lacrosse scandal looks like it’s going to go away. I reacted in a non-balanced way, as I’m pretty sure that many alums did. I wish I’d been more even-handed, less likely to believe the worst of the Duke Lax team. I didn’t say they were guilty, but I sure [...]

I was thinking this morning about just how much my life has changed from a year ago. Exactly a year ago, of course, I was in S. America, probably hiking in weather much like the rain that’s falling outside my window right now. I left the full-time world, went to school for something I dearly [...]

I know I’m a sucker for all things Gaiman, but this image from the upcoming Stardust film made me really happy. I hope they do a good job with it…

And, how appropriate that it’s at the end of the year that I found it (via World Hum, which everyone should read). A Sense of the World: How a Blind Man Became History’s Greatest Traveler by Jason Roberts. It’s rare that I read a nonfiction book that leaves me equal parts thrilled, sad, and optimistic.
I [...]

Had my last class of the semester today; ’twas very enjoyable, and more enjoyable to be finished. I’m not working tonight - watching Monk on DVD and playing around with the Interwebs.
Very relaxing.

I’m so close to being done with school for the semester, but I’m not…quite…there. What I’ve done today is kind of nutty. I woke up at seven thirty and clicked on NPR, then fell into a half doze, where I ended up dreaming about one of the stories they had on the morning news show. [...]

Scared you, didn’t I? No, this is not the final writing for this site, but merely a commentary on writing the first final paper I’ve written in nearly ten years. It’s not easy. I spent about three hours tonight working on the sucker - writing, rewriting, re-looking things up, double-checking sources, etc. I think I’ve [...]

I’m at my favorite cafe, which has (unfortunately) stopped enforcing their no-cell-phone-calls inside policy, and there’s a guy across from me who has a Bluetooth headset on, and he’s making massive hand gestures while he talks loudly. It’s super-annoying, and he looks like a total idiot.
Too bad for him - he’s just made it into [...]

There’s a concept in distance running and biking called “bonking” - it’s when you have been going so hard for so long that your body goes into oxygen lack and your limbs basically go into slow motion. I’ve physically bonked a few times (backpacking each time; I’ve never lost it while running, which might explain [...]

I read this article with interest, mostly because it talks about a North Beach that I’ve never come close to seeing, and partially because I’m struggling with writing about Place right now (it’s hard. Where do you live? Now describe it. Now describe what it’s really about. Tell me about the things that live in [...]

I’m posting at nine-thirty on a Saturday night. I am sitting at my desk with my legs crossed and my heater on, listening to the Pipettes (thanks as usual to Willo for the music), sipping on hot cocoa with a nip of Baileys, and trying to use the typing I’m doing right now as a [...]

Some grad student is measuring how fast memes spread across these here Internets. Kind of a cool experiment, and you can take a look at it (and link to it to help spread the meme) here. Go nuts, ye blogging friends!
