I’m sitting at my desk, listening to Dean Wareham sing a Stephin Merritt song, working on a brain-teaser of a task for a freelance gig that I am taking on, and I’m nearly done.
My absolute favorite silly Internet thing that I’ve seen in the past few weeks is one that I somehow missed when the [...]

I’m sitting here writing a bit, and I thought I’d put my music on random and see what comes up:
“Cheating at Solitaire” - Mike Ness. Awesome song, really bitter.
“Thumbtack” - Bob Mould. Wow, this is kind of crummy. Skip.
“Sea of Heartbreak” - Don Gibson. I think Johnny Cash did this one [...]

So I’m writing this new thing, and I’m running into a snare, and I need some help. Here’s the backstory - the main character is thinking of as many things as he can that young people (you know your deal, you’re overqualified, underworked, and generally resentful of having to spend time in an office [...]

Well, I have to say that Sequoia is…well, it’s beautiful. This is one of those cases where words don’t do it justice. Since this is my blog on my website, I can post an obligatory make-you-jealous picture, though.
Yep, that’s me in the mountains. I love being up there.

The US is out of the World Cup, which means that people can go back to rooting for Ghana, which is fine.
I ran 16 miles this morning, so the marathon training continues apace. Running 16 miles at a stretch is not particularly easy.
I’m headed out this weekendto go camping with my brother, and today has [...]

I was at Safeway just now (I never go to Safeway, but they’re the only place around that sells Gatorade powder), and as I was leaving, a guy was coming in. He had more tattoos than your average fellow, and his hair was dyed blonde, spiky, and all over the place. Punk as hell.
‘Twas Lars [...]

Did a big chunk of writing today (over 1300 words, if you’re counting, and I’m an obsessive word-counter). A bit of it:
“What do you mean?” she said, twirling her hair around her finger. She had been twirling her hair ever since the old man had dropped me off at this counter, which I [...]

Very odd break from the usual stuff I write about here to note that the Net Neutrality debate is going to the Senate, and knowing what’s going on would be a pretty good idea. What is it?
Well, the interweb as we know it is a “pull” place. You make a request from a server and [...]

Just got an email from a guy doing research for a local magazine. They want to interview the folks over at Municide. Now, I’m many things and I write a fair amount of stuff online, some of which is actually pretty funny. But Municide I ain’t. I’m kind of curious as to [...]

A friend of mine left me My Sister’s Keeper by Jode Picoult; I wanted to read it because she’d had it on a trip to the mountains a couple of weeks back, and she’d been completely absorbed.
It’s an absorbing book, to put it mildly; after reading King Dork I’m now officially on an ass-kicking streak [...]

Just got back from Dr. Frank’s show at the Rickshaw. He was friendly and animated (and signed my copy of King Dork), and played for nearly an hour. Most of the old MTX songs come across fine as acoustic pieces, which makes me think…since most pop-punk is about melody, wouldn’t most of that genre work [...]

Man, they’re probably hurting a bit at the old alma mater:
Interesting stuff: I just participated in a very detailed telephone survey asking about my opinions of Duke and its response to the lacrosse scandal. The survey was conducted by an independent marketing corporation out of Denver on behalf of an unidentified sponsor. I think Duke [...]

I went ahead and registered for the San Francisco Marathon today. The course looks pretty fun, in a not-too-many-hills-for-San-Francisco kind of way. Also, the little movie at the start of their website begins right near my house, I think. Pretty cool. Expect lots of complaining about how tired I am over the next few weeks.

One of my favorite bands of the late ’90s (although they were around well before that ) was the Mr. T Experience. I first saw ‘em at the Cat’s Cradle in 1996, with Squirtgun, and I remember being captivated by Dr. Frank singing “Even Hitler Had a Girlfriend.” I saw them again in Boston in [...]

I went and saw The Mountain Goats tonight over at Bottom of the Hill, and they put on an absolutely amazing show. Only and hour and ten minutes, but…
I’ve never been to an honest-to-God Baptist revival, the kind where the preacher is sweating and screaming, his collar has come undone and people are speaking in [...]

A friend of mine sent me a link to this article in Rolling Stone about the current scene at Duke. I found it to be pretty depressing. Not just because the author (by her own admission) focuses exclusively on the Duke 500 - four frats and related sororities that are at the top [...]

So, last night I spilled a drink on my Ibook keyboard, thus resulting in (as of midnight last night) only the “J” key functioning. I’m letting it dry out today, and will see if it works tomorrow, but until then, not a lot of work is going to get done. Kind of a [...]

I finally finished editing a new episode of The Chronicles of Charlie, and it’s been delayed because I’m lazy and started work on something else. It’s not too bad, and I think it’s going in a good direction. Updates will be more sporadic over the next few weeks because of this other thing I’m working [...]

Well, it’s June 6, 2006, and that means:
It’s National Day of Slayer
It’s the 42nd anniversary of D-Day.
It’s election day. I don’t throw down recommendations, but voting is probably a good idea.
That’s what’s going on today. That and some writing.

I’m headed to the East Bay hills today to hike around in the groves near where I went to preschool. I’m kind of curious about how it will go - one of my only memories of that time period is when we’d take trips to the ranger station and they’d talk to us. My only [...]
