Music maven Willo turned me on to Band of Horses, who are officially my obsession of the moment - well, today, anyway. More specifically, the song “Funeral” is blowing my mind out the door. It’s hard to describe what I like so much about this song…it’s as if they wrote several hooks and took the [...]

I headed down to get a burrito this evening after a day spent cleaning up my email, running, and doing a bit of marketing work for myself. When I got to El Castillito, a line of hipsters-dressed-as-gutter-punks were eating on all of the stools facing the window.
After my meal, I walked back up to my [...]

It’s a weird Memorial Day when it snows while you’re grilling, but that’s what happened to me this past weekend. Many thanks to the Y for hooking us up with a place to stay for the weekend, and many kudos to the wonderful people we stayed with. It’s all about friends, old and new.

It’s 4:53 on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, and I’m sitting in a cafe doing the wireless thing. As is typical these days, there are four Macs on the table I’m sharing - two identical-to-mine Ibooks, and a large PowerBook Titanium. Ah, yuppie culture.
In case anyone is interested, I’m headed out tomorrow - off [...]

This is one of those things that come up every now and then that make me wonder about…well, things. Like every other kid my age, I grew up watching professional wrestling on occasion. Boy kid, that is. Girls didn’t seem to be into it - steroid freaks in their underwear, what’s to hate?
Anyway, one of [...]

I’m sick yet again, which makes this the third cold I’ve had this year, which makes no sense. I’m as physically fit as they come, eat relatively healthily, and get tons of sleep. Yet, I am ill. I know exactly who gave this illness to me (but the dinner was completely worth it); it’s just [...]

All kinds of spam. This blog has been inundated with comment spam lately, which both artificially inflates my traffic numbers and makes me spend inordinate amounts of time dealing with blacklist words. Thank goodness for Akisnet, the Wordpress smam-killer.
And, email spam. I get forty to fifty a day, killed by a dual layer -Yahoo’s spam [...]

I’m home this morning, listening to Joe Strummer’s Streetcore. It’s a good album, and it kind of sounds like he was trying to sum up his own career while making it. “Coma Girl” is a great, great pop song. A punk icon aged gracefully, and then he died.
On a related note, Grant McLennan of the [...]

I’ve been busy and offline, hence little writing here. But, I had a thought that I wanted to share. Some friends and I were talking the other day while we were in Golden Gate Park near the drum circle - what exactly constitutes a hippie these days? There are certainly Phishheads, stoners, drummers, reggae fiends, [...]

I am about to head out to Laguna Seca to volunteer at the 24 Hours of Adrenaline Mountain Bike Race. My housemate and his friends are doing it, and I’m stoked to be a part of it. The upshot is that I’ll be hanging out, grilling, camping, etc. alll day tomorrow. Complete with folding chairs [...]

I finally hung out for a bit at Ritual Coffee Roasters for a bit this afternoon; it was exactly as I’d pictured it. Laptops everywhere, but not for me, as I was busy reading a comic I’d picked up at the library called Ultra, a wacky title about the every day lives of superheroines. Not [...]

I was riding my mountain bike over in the Marin Headlands today, and on my way up and out of the trail system, I saw a deer. Ordinarily, that’s not much to write home (or, in this case, online) about, but this deer had spring antlers. Those little horns were maybe seven inches longl. Mr. [...]

Yep, I’m back from New York. Pics are up on the Flickr page (on the right, if you’re bored). I had a total blast, didn’t eat a single burrito, saw as many friends as I could, and went to a solid wedding at West Point. Highlights:
1) Saw a barge going down the Hudson River. I [...]

I’m off to New York City early tomorrow, after a very hectic day today. It’s always fun to visit New York, but I always feel strange about it. Four years ago to the day I showed up there with the intention of making the place my home.
I left for many reasons, the most [...]

I was emailing with an old friend today, and I wrote something good:
“I’ll say hi to NYC for you, and will tip a glass to the traveling soul.”
I really like that sentence - it works on several levels (sorry, can’t write here about what they are), but it has a certain lilt to it that [...]

I woke up today just a little bit late and went down to Cafe du Soleil for a breakfast meeting with a friend of mine. “Breakfast” is a strong word; I was still kind of whacked out from ultimate frisbee last night and slept until five minutes before the meeting. Luckily, it went well, and [...]

My new external hard drive arrived with a defective on/off switch, so it physically cannot stay on, just shuts down. Returning it to NewEgg tomorrow. That’s three jacked up hard drives, in case you’re wondering. Lesson? I dunno - back up to DVD?

I figured out that the site wasn’t working for IE, so now it is. Sorry about that. I ended up downtown right as the big immigration protest/walkout/boycott was happening, and it was pretty interesting. Check my flickr page (on the right) for photos. One thing that stood out was how organized it was - the [...]

I was going to write up something about the immigration imbroglio that’s going to happen today, but (happily) Maya wrote something better that pretty much mirrors my thinking.

Not commenting really on the Duke Lacrosse thing, but trolling around this morning I found this repugnant editorial in a publication that calls itself “a project of frontiers of freedom,” complete with standard-issue eagle and flag imagery.
Sigh. It wouldn’t be fun to go through and nuke his thinking bit-by-bit, but I do have a favorite [...]
