Charlie Episode Eighteen

Dan | March 31, 2006

I’ve posted the eighteenth little episode of the Chronicles of Charlie over on the site. This one is very, very, very dark.

I loves the Rock!

Dan | March 31, 2006

I’m really happy that the estimable Dr. Frank of the Mr. T Experience has written a book. King Dork is here, and is getting some pretty good reviews.
I first saw MTX about ten years ago, when Frank was in his early 30s. I thanked him for all of his songs when I ran [...]

I’m a junior ranger

Dan | March 31, 2006

Well, that’s kind of interesting. I didn’t make it into the MFA program at SF State, but I was accepted to the MA program, which is similar and then can lead to a transfer over to the MFA (terminal degree). I think I’m going to do it, as it’s a very good deal [...]

Bad juju

Dan | March 31, 2006

Once again it’s time to write in total generalities, but what the hell is going on around here these days? Nothing affecting me personally (after the bloody leg and jacked contact lens incident, I’m ok), but there seems to be quite a bit of unsettled weirdness floating around folks I know. Chalk it up [...]

Rest in peace

Dan | March 30, 2006

I had a very sad phone call last night from my old college roommate. His father died yesterday morning at the age of 77. That’s pretty old, yeah, but not old enough. He died of complications from pulmonary fibrosis, a pretty awful disease.
One of my favorite scenes in Sandman is [...]

Another eye thing

Dan | March 29, 2006

I was headed down to a cafe this evening with a friend, and…well, it was annoying. I had put an umbrella in my shoulder bag, with the handle sticking out. When I took my shoulder bag off, the umbrella handle punched me in the left eye, and knocked my contact lens out.
Needless to say, [...]

Administrative

Dan | March 29, 2006

Just a note: I’m switching servers today, so this may or may not work over the next few hours…

More Duke stuff

Dan | March 28, 2006

The Duke Lacrosse rape scandal is still going strong, as the general commentary across the Internet seems to be “rich white guys in a rich white sport who will probably get off scott-free because of Daddy’s money.”
Unfortunately, they may be right. I have to give some props to Deadspin for posting the entire [...]

What to do today?

Dan | March 28, 2006

I have an old college acquaintance in town, and he’s coming up this afternoon on the train, looking to do something or other. I’m not exactly sure what to do, because the weather is completely crappy - hiking is impossible. So, what do I do? Hang out at Cafe du Soleil and [...]

Funny San Francisco coffeehouse people

Dan | March 27, 2006

In my recent spate of semi-slackerhood, I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in coffeehouses - the office for the unemployed. Whilst hanging out in places like this (I’m writing from du Soleil on Waller and Fillmore), I’ve seen several types of funny people. This is who’s here today:
1) Laptop folks who [...]

Sad news from the alma mater

Dan | March 27, 2006

I don’t keep up much with news from Duke these days, although I did catch the last basketball game. Of much more importance is this news concerning the lacrosse team. They threw an off-campus party, got loaded, called in a couple of strippers, freaked them out, and allegedly raped, beat, and [...]

Raging religious weirdos

Dan | March 25, 2006

Wandering through the Web this morning, I come across this article about Acquire The Fire holding a rally at AT&T/SBC/Whateverthehellits called Park down on South Beach.
Pretty funny stuff - the article touches a bit on the irony of these Christian Youth Ministry outreach idiots doing an event in San Francisco, but misses the part where [...]

Two down

Dan | March 24, 2006

Got negged from the Standford/Stegner thingy today (no great surprise; it’s the hardest thing to get in to in the world).
In addition, I got my CA drivers license, and it’s the worst pic of me ever. I look like a sunburned, drunk sociopath.

A few notes

Dan | March 23, 2006

Had a wonderful night up in Sacramento, came back to SF today in a much, much better mood. Nothing like a bit of love from a seven year old to pick you up a touch. I’m headed out snowboarding tomorrow evening with one of my very close friends, which is nice.
But…there’s [...]

Failure

Dan | March 22, 2006

Oh, geez, it’s not like I’m obsessing about myself-as-failure. My brand-spanking-new external hard drive is failing to mount on a regular basis, and has started to make odd knocking noises - after I’ve spent untold hours ripping discs. Shit.
Luckily, my housemate has extra storage space on his external, so I’m copying everything over [...]

Another show review

Dan | March 22, 2006

Went to see Belle and Sebastian with the New Pornographers this evening, at the concourse (it’s a convention center) down South of Market. It was a good show, and would have been better if I hadn’t been
1) Exhausted
and
2) Down
and
3) In quite a bit of pain
I tweaked my neck again, somehow, so I can’t [...]

A little show review

Dan | March 21, 2006

I went last-minute to see Art Brut at the Bottom of the Hill last night; what a fantastic show! The openers (forgot the name) were pretty awful - I kind of felt I was in a Castro karaoke bar, and my friend pointed out that our levels of irony were a bit too healthy [...]

Well, this is me

Dan | March 19, 2006

Via Maya, it’s yet another personality test!
This is me:

Interesting…I just got back from a nuclear-powered hike in the east bay, so I have no idea if this is accurate in all situations. Twelve miles, 4000 feet of climbing. Ow.

Screw them, I’m writing…

Dan | March 17, 2006

Rather than brood, I put up a new episode of The Chronicles of Charlie.

Rejection #1…

Dan | March 17, 2006

Well, that’s one down. No dice from over at St. Mary’s, easily the least-prestigious MFA program I applied for…hm. Needless to say, this doesn’t bode well for future hearings-from-grad-school. On the other hand, maybe they’re just pissed because I was two days late with the application fee.
