It wasn’t raining when I woke up on Christmas morning…yet. I was just a bit disoriented when my eyes opened at half past seven; in a bunk bed, underneath four heavy wool blankets, my breath puffing out in little clouds in front of my eyes. Oh. Right. I was at the [...]

I cried a little bit today. I was on the bus from Quito down to Latacanga, where I´m spending the night as a break on my way to Chugchilan. The drive was about three hours, up and over yet another Ecuadorian mountain range, and…
There were people all along the road. Families, [...]

I am clean for the first time in five days. Please, no jokes about ‘um, so what else is new, Dan?’ I’ve spent the last week down in the Oriente, the area of Ecuador where the mountains end and the jungle begins. The rivers that feed the Amazon start here, and it’s [...]

Since I’m headed to Ecuador, I thought I’d make a little list of things I enjoyed this year (warning - navel-gazing ahead):
Finally going to Seattle, the most beautiful city I’ve ever seen.
Snowboarding on a beautiful sunny weekend in Tahoe.
Camping in the Trinity Alps with my brother.
Solo backpacking down in Big Sur, and having a burrito [...]

Yes, I will be posting here while I wander around South America; strange stuff tends to happen to me, so I’m sure there will be stories aplenty. Quito, here I come!

I’m a little tweaked; didn’t sleep particularly well last night.
This article about the Boomer legacy made me snort water and laugh out loud. I don’t have any real comments, although the writer either is clueless or really wanted to make everyone he quoted sound ridiculous and self-absorbed.
Read two books yesterday: The Encyclopedia [...]

Very quiet day today, after a wonderful breakfast at Dottie’s True Blue Cafe in the Tenderloin. Dottie’s has fantastic food, and you get the Sunday morning street theater of the ‘loin while you wait in line out front. Afterwards, I biked down Jones towards Market, where a large crowd was lined [...]

I hit the Sports Basement today to pick up some stuff I need for my upcoming Ecuador trip. SB is like TJ Maxx for outdoorsy equipment; they took over the old px down at the Presidio, and have tons and tons of sports/camping/biking things. I had most of what I need, but some of [...]

I’m a huge fan of guys who’ve managed to do dumb stuff and make little online phenomena out of them, from Join Me to the Million Dollar Home Page.
This guy, however, might take the cake. One Red Paper Clip. He started with one red paper clip, and is trying to trade [...]

So, we had some stuff happen at work, and I’m getting some vacation time a bit earlier than I thought I would (it’s easier to take time in an agency around Xmas, anyway).
So….(hold your breath). I’m headed to Ecuador! Next Wednesday! From the 14th through the 3rd of January. There are a [...]

No, this isn’t going to be a post about the Inspiral Carpets. I’ve had not much interesting happen in the past 24 hours, except for some Burritophile-related stuff that I’ll relate on that site when it becomes concrete. It’s really, really cool, though. Trust me on this one.
1) I saw the [...]

A new episode is up over at The Chronicles of Charlie. Get out the hankies, kids, this one’s a corker.

I was driving (or, riding in a car, as I don’t own one) across the Bay Bridge this morning to go to Walnut Creek for some much-needed mountain biking, and the two right lanes of the bridge were closed as we entered the eastern span. When we got to the uncovered part, there was [...]

Even when you’re doing cool stuff. I was up very late last night drafting the next episode of The Chronicles of Charlie, and it’s kind of a corker. There’s a surprise at the end (and it’s not even the end), and I got the idea whilst biking home in the sprinkles and the [...]

Out running this morning, saw a small bumper sticker on a Chevrolet Cavalier:
Republicans for Voldemort.
Nice.

I was torn on whether to ride my bike into work today. But, since I spent last night volunteering at the San Francisco Bike Coalition, I felt like it would be kind of hypocritical to take the bus. Plus, given the rain, MUNI would take forever. And, I don’t have an umbrella, so [...]
