No posting for the weekend; I’m off to a redeye flight to NYC, the place I fled from nearly three years ago. I flew because I was in love and thought that New York had kicked me out, and the long and short of is was that I ended up in San Francisco. [...]

In the summer of 1995 I won tickets to the Pearl Jam concert at the Polo Grounds in San Francisco.
Ten years ago, Pearl Jam was the biggest thing alive. So big that my mom warned me not to get hurt in the pit (in all fairness, I did come home once from a Social [...]

I woke up this morning in a spate of pain, due to playing a wicked game of Ultimate (not Ultimate Frisbee–there are trademark implications so it’s just Ultimate, which is weird) last night, only sitting out four points. Sleep was not really much good at all.
On the bus, a woman was blabbing into her [...]

Forgot to mention–caught Commnique at the Mesh thingy at the Rickshaw on Saturday night. Go, listen, love them. They rule like Frederick the Great did over Prussia.

Last night was One Of Those Nights. I was going to write, but I got a phone call, so I went to
1) Shanghai Kelly’s, where I had fun making fun of the dudes who were desperately hitting on my two friends. One guy asked if I was their gay judging friend guy. [...]

I’m making this one up, in honor of the below post about Iron Maiden.
10 Albums that Should Be On Every Jukebox, but Never Are
(Note: this is not your favorite 10 albums ever. This is dedicated to music that, when it comes on at the bar, makes you want to raise your glass and go [...]

I just finished reading The Great Gatsby. I started it in my room two days ago and finished it up at the Utopia Cafe in Chinatown over a sizzling rice clay pot. Or, after a sizzling rice clay pot. Rarely have I read a book that finished so strongly and with that [...]

Fascinating article in the Weekly today about the SF Conservatory, its students, the SFC’s impending move, and the effect of the diminishing market for classical music on the ability of classical musicians to find a job. Great work, great article.
I had a friend who graduated from the Conservatory, took a couple [...]

I’m fried today, so little writing, trying to save up some energy to work on the Chronicles tonight. Some day I’m going to stop trying to live on five hours of sleep on a Monday night, especially after raising a few glasses to Ernie Pyle.
Maybe when I’m 30.
On the other hand, [...]

Today is the 60th anniversary of the death of Ernie Pyle, the greatest war correspondent of World War II, and perhaps the best of all time. I just finished reading his biography; he was a sad man, a workoholic and an alcoholic. His family life was a disaster–his wife was manic-depressive and suicidal, [...]

The first episode of The Chronicles of Charlie is up. It’s pretty much an introductory story, so it’s not too long, but I think it’s ok. I’ll be putting up a new chapter every two weeks. Many, many thanks to my pal Aaron for doing the site design. Blog readers are getting [...]

Don’t try to stay with friends of mine after you’ve been warned. Sorry, Maya, your friend Dave was duly warned, and had to kick off at around midnight. We stayed at the Noc Noc with a bottle of sake and the Tamale Lady until closing.

Saw a very San Francisco thing last night in the Montgomerey station. A beefy guy was set up next to the billboards where musicians usually play; he had a mohawk and big sideburns, and was belting out “Your Cheatin’ Heart” by Hank Williams. The way he was singing it was strange, clipped. [...]

Started reading Ernie Pyle’s War by James Tobin. Fifty pages in and I’m hooked. Pyle, for me, is kind of like Studs Terkel–one of those guys from a generation gone who exemplifies everything that is good and selfless.
If you don’t know who Pyle was—read Ernie’s War. The guy was incredible.

Jerry Jenkins, hack behind the Left Behind series, on how much he writes per day:
once I’m in there I’ll probably write 20 pages a day until it’s done. If I get behind, then I’ll write more than that. I try not to get behind because I don’t like to write more than 20 any more. [...]

Not that anyone’s been clamoring for it, but I figured I’d leak a bit of info on one of my two fun side projects; I’ve alluded to them in the past (the Website That Will Change YourLife Forever! was one of them, and not the one I’m writing about here).
Anyway, I’m writing fiction again, which [...]
