Was at a Noisepop show, had the privilege to see The Devil Makes Three and Two Gallants tonight, and I fell back in love with rock n’ roll.
The Devil Makes Three play country-fried Hank Williams on crystal meth, a 120 bpm slap-bass honkytonk hoedown of badass country. They’re everything that Nashville hates, and everything [...]

I use Yahoo mail, and I’ve always been weirded out by the picture of the woman on the sign-in page. She’s got that look that says “I’m an alien, and I’m going to read all of your email and use that knowledge to take you away to the land of endless prostate exams and [...]

Today in the Guardian, a member of SF’s Coalition on Homelessness (website down now, so no link) writes about this year’s homeless census, which showed fewer homeless folks in the city than last year. The editorial is accompanied by the usual pious progressive pap from the Guardian’s editorial board trashing Mayor Newsom because they [...]

I’m really sad that I missed most of this debate over at Maya’s yesterday; I commented, but I think I’m going to expound here, because the land use topic is one that hits close to home.
It dovetails with my Ipod post below. As people build more and bigger houses, it becomes harder and harder to [...]

I really liked this article by Andrew Sullivan about the Ipodization of the world. To be fair, what he’s really talking about is the Ipodization of cities, not the world…but his point is great. How can it be good that 50% of the people who are walking around in a city are listening [...]

So, when it rains, it pours; no sooner do I finish one freelance project, I get another, and it’s due on Wednesday morning, and I’m already going to the barleywine festival at the Toronado tonight, and I’ve got to write more fiction, because it’s bubbling out of my ears.
Also, I feel like I should write [...]

Weekends like this, I remember why I’m glad I came back to California after many years away.
Saturday: hung over. Ate lunch at the Cliff House, watched a few surfers brave the rain and the wind, then played Goldeneye: Rogue Agent at a friend’s house for three hours. I blew up a ton [...]

My God, I’m tired. Freelancing, working, and finishing off stuff from last weekend’s scavenger hunt has left me dead.
What, you want to know what this scavenger hunt stuff is all about?
Here. I helped to organize the thing, and we sent nearly sixty people all over San Francisco. Warning–some of the photos are [...]

Hipster dog-show watching party on the Lower East Side. That one should be on Fark with the “obvious” tag. Whatever happened to liking something because, um, you liked it?

In response to my earlier post about San Francisco indie-fucks (I really hate swearing this much, but that’s the name and there’s not much I can do about it) and Amanda’s comment about IFs in Texas, I thought I’d rank the top cities for IFs. This is totally subjective, and probably inaccurate because I’m [...]

Last night I was hanging out at Bean There on Steiner and Waller. I was ostensibly there to do some work–I’ve been doing some freelance stuff for a publishing co. in Boston (no, nothing exciting. I’m indexing a ninth grade science textbook).
Naturally, I didn’t have what I needed to do the stuff, which [...]

Here in San Francisco, we suffer from an epidemic of over-snottified indie people. Back in Boston, we used to call them IRFs (Indie-Rock Fucks). Here, that designation is too specific. We’ve got ITFs (Indie-Techno Fucks), IHFs (Indie-House Fucks), IBBFs(Indie-Break-Beat Fucks), IABBFs (Indie-Anti-Break-Beat Fucks), IACBNWFs(Indie-Alt-Country-But-Not-Wilco-Fucks), and even IRNGBOEMIFPFs (Indie Random-Noise-Generated-By-Only-Electronics-Melody-Is-For-Pussies Fucks).
Rather than continue [...]

It’s kind of funny to write about stuff online (I think the verb “blog” is kind of weird) when you have very little to say. I guess I could review Rocks of Ages, which I finished last night, but I get the feeling people like it better when I’m trying to be a bit [...]

One piece of the American legal system has always bothered me: Why do people go to law school for three years, spend $100,000 on tuition and whatnot, and then have to study eight months for the bar?
Why not just be a paralegal, learn on the job, study for the bar, and be a lawyer? [...]

The temp agency called up on a Monday morning at about eight a.m. I was used to this, and kept my cell phone right next to Kristen’s bed so as to be able to answer without moving.
“Hey Dan, it’s Appropriate.”
“Hey,” I said. “What’s up?”
“You around on Wednesday night?”
“Wednesday night….sure.” I had thrown [...]

Wow, I got another wonderful comment from yet another Dan over at Guy Stuff. Thanks, name-brothers! Stuff like that makes me take stabs again at fiction (which has been a real bugaboo lately).

Scavenger hunt tomorrow, emergency at work, plus freelance work = little writing being done. I’m working on a “Crappy Jobs” post for Monday; for some reason it’s a hard one to write. But, it’s a goodie. Think Sedaris.

I was sitting next to an achingly beautiful girl with dyed red hair, carrying the kind of funky slightly-hipster accessories (rubber bag, neat jacket, etc.) that give you a sense of cool without falling into the San Francisco Indie Rock Bastard trap.
She was wearing a hot pink spiked bracelet with a death’s head clasp. [...]
